It can't be that long between posts

I cannot believe it has been so long since the last post. We have had some highs and lows since we parked at Green Cove Springs in 2017.

Maintenance Time

Just an update on the status of 38 South. September was an interesting month with Hurricane Irma's path to be right across the top of the boat. It meant a quickly assembled trip across to further strip and secure her for the pending bad weather. As it turned out it was a glancing blow and we received [...]

Out of the Water

Well we are now on dry land. This morning the mast was removed and the boat lifted from the water. we have now been placed in our "spot" until we return. we have been continuing the preparations to leave. The motors have been run on fresh water to flush the salt water from the heat exchangers and [...]

Packing up takes time

Well the packing up seems so huge. there is so much to do. we have been getting organised with bags and such and will probably leave most of our stuff on the boat, clothes and the like. there only seems to be the souvenirs and my dive gear that has to come home. Our suitcases are like the russian [...]

This is home for the boat for the next year

now that we are in the US, under the terms of our cruising permit we are required to make a telephone call in to Customs and Border Protection for a "Coastwise Movement" notification each time we move. For our run up the Intracoastal Waterway this has been an almost daily occurrence. travelling up through [...]

In the US of A

Well we hired a golf cart and had a good look around which took the best part of a couple of hours. turns out some of the best scenery is over the hill about 300 metres from where we are in the Marina. we took some drinks across to the beach at sunset and sat and toasted the sunset with some snacks. [...]

Island Hopping for the day

20 March 2017 | Shroud Cay to Allens Cay via Highbourne Cay
We awoke to a quiet sunny morning without too much wind. There was a number of creeks dissecting the Shroud Cay through the mangroves so we took a dinghy ride up one of the creeks in the quiet of the morning. We disturbed a big ray on the way through and could see schools of fish swimming in the crystal-clear water. the tide was low but coming in and we made it as far as we could and just drifted back across the Cay toward the boat. A magnificent start to the day. Once back on board we hoisted the sails and headed off to Highbourne Cay a few miles north. Arriving just before lunch we dropped the hook outside the marina in a quiet bay out of the current and had a relaxing lunch before continuing on. We arrived at Allens Cay mid-afternoon and made ourselves comfortable. Rounding up some old bread we headed off to shore to check out the Iguanas. As before these guys hear an outboard motor and come charging down obviously knowing there is a feed to be had. We were soon surrounded by hungry Iguanas and Mezz was again in her element. We wandered around the Cay for a while having a good look around and checking out the ruins of yet another concrete building that has succumbed to the rust expansion of the reinforcing and has split apart. It seems to be the demise of a lot of houses over here. They are built well to survive a hurricanes but over time the salt environment gets into the steel reinforcing and breaks the house apart. Back on the boat by early evening and we finally ate the last piece of Wahoo that Mick caught on the way to Samana in the Dominican Republic. A delicious piece of Grilled Wahoo with a side of creamy pasta. I did some engine checks and topped up the oil ready for the following days passage across to Nassau.
