Its not all Palm trees and Margueritas

we are anchored in a small abandoned canal development near West End, Bahamas. The weather is not conducive to crossing the gulf stream to West Palm Beach, winds are expected to top 40 knots from the north today and not settle until later in the week. we chose to seek shelter in this anchorage which [...]

Two weeks back on the boat

Well we arrived back to 38 South exactly 2 weeks ago and have been fully engrossed in cleaning and upgrades since then. It took at least 2 days to have the boat clean and aired out enough to live comfortably and from that point on it has been a matter of listing jobs in order of priority. There has [...]

It can't be that long between posts

I cannot believe it has been so long since the last post. We have had some highs and lows since we parked at Green Cove Springs in 2017.

Maintenance Time

Just an update on the status of 38 South. September was an interesting month with Hurricane Irma's path to be right across the top of the boat. It meant a quickly assembled trip across to further strip and secure her for the pending bad weather. As it turned out it was a glancing blow and we received [...]

Out of the Water

Well we are now on dry land. This morning the mast was removed and the boat lifted from the water. we have now been placed in our "spot" until we return. we have been continuing the preparations to leave. The motors have been run on fresh water to flush the salt water from the heat exchangers and [...]

Packing up takes time

Well the packing up seems so huge. there is so much to do. we have been getting organised with bags and such and will probably leave most of our stuff on the boat, clothes and the like. there only seems to be the souvenirs and my dive gear that has to come home. Our suitcases are like the russian [...]

Cabin Fever again

27 March 2017 | Alice Town, Bimini
well the weather predicted for Friday was certainly accurate and on the higher end, It had been blowing consistently to 30 kts for a few days and we could see the passage across to Chub Cay was off. This allowed us to pick up a couple of T-shirts that had been requested and I went to visit a guy hand rolling Cuban Cigars. I gave up smoking 20 years ago but I have now 3 Cuban cigars waiting for the right time to be brought out. another 2 days were spent in Nassau waiting for the weather to abate enough to leave, our opportunity came on Sunday morning and we departed Nassau with 20kts on the beam and headed out. our plan was to overnight in Chub Cay which was about 15 miles from the edge of the Bahama Bank and from there it was about 60 miles across to Bimini. about half way across is a place called Mackie Shoal or Mackie Bank. We understood that as the wind was from the East if we anchored on the western side we would get some shelter to anchor for the night. it had eased of to 15-20kts by the time we arrived at Chub Cay and we decided to keep going and drop the hook at Mackie Shoal to make up a bit of time. well on arrival and after circling the shallowest areas we weren't happy with the conditions so we just continued to Bimini arriving at 0500 this morning. We slept for a few hours until we were overflown by a US Coastguard plane who began hailing us on the VHF. they must keep a close eye on the comings and goings. we were required to give the vessel and passenger details. once I told them that i had a US Customs and Border Protection Decal on the boat and gave them the number they we quite happy and bid us farewell.
We have booked into the Bimini Blue Water Resort and Marina for 2 days before crossing the Gulf Stream to Florida and that will give us some time to do a little sightseeing. We got the washing dropped off at the laundromat and back again and the combo red/green navigation light on the bow had stopped working last night. That ended up being a complete rewire all the way back to the front cabin and took longer than expected. we finished the day off tonight with Lamb Chops on the Magma Bbq and me writing up the blog. It has been a big 36 hours so and early night is in order. Hiring a golf cart is the order of the day tomorrow for a look around, it shouldn't take too long as it is not a very big place. oh and water temperature is up to 25 degrees from the 23 degrees we saw in Nassau. we may include a snorkel in the day as well
