Just a few days ago the wood stove was crackling and the socks were on. Does anyone need a reminder that autumn is on it’s way here in the northeastern USA? John and I left New York just a few days ago, now we are back to flip flops and shorts. I will miss the leaves changing color but as John points out, we’ve watched the leaves change for many a season. Anyway, the biggest change is not the weather, it’s the empty nest.
Where are the girls? Jordan is in Wyoming finishing up her seasonal job before she visits us in Florida and then off to another job in Puerto Rico. Kendall is taking a year off from Clark University to work with Americorp. We hope she will be posted in Atlanta in a few weeks so we can drive out to see her. Allison began classes at The School of Fashion Design in Boston a few weeks ago. So far, so good. Meanwhile, home base felt strangely quiet. I’m not sure that I like it but at least we have new adventures to keep life interesting.
So far we haven’t been disappointed and for all the organizing done in advance we still had more than one glitch on our first day here. The marina was notified a few weeks in advance that we were coming so Ñyapa could be pulled out of deep storage and into the working yard. We took a ride through the yard, once twice, no Ñyapa. Then the car we reserved at the local Enterprise had a flat tire that needed to be replaced. Enterprise gave us a great deal for our trouble and were more than accommodating. The marina jumped into action and we had Ñyapa in the working yard before the end of the day. Was it Ma or Pa Ingalls in the Little House Series, whose favorite saying was “All”s well that ends well”? Whoever it was, well said.
The boat is in good shape after being left for three months. One gripe, the oiled teak turned black. I think we’ll skip the oil next time. Life on the hard is never fun. The days find us in an eternal sweat as we get the boat in order and the bottom painted. The evenings find us batting away mosquitos and wondering about the mysterious insects flying around the boat, they look alarmingly similar to small cock roaches. I’m freaking out just a little.
Knowing that my kids will be just dropping in on us from here on in has made me a little nostalgic so I’m throwing in an old picture of them right after we had began cruising in Mexico 14 years ago. I also have included a few pics of our summer and beautiful Washington County.
