Birthday Storm

08 April 2013 | San Evaristo, BCS, Mexico
If its Friday - It must be sunny!
Vicki's birthday. We had a small folding step-stool that we didn't need, so we took it to the family that runs the restaurant. Now this is not a fancy restaurant as you can see from the photo. They only have one table! The roof is made from thatched palm fronds, woven in a beautiful pattern, as you can see in the photo. They were very appreciative for the stepstool. We bought some tequila then went back to the boat and celebrated with margarita's.
I checked Sailmail and found a email from our daughter Amber, saying that Andrew was in the hospital with cellulitis and possible MRSA. Unfortunately, we are about 2 days from civilization if we have to go home. Our biggest worry is not storms, breakdowns or falling overboard. Our biggest source of anxiety is something happening to our family while we are in remote locations, unable to even return home.
We do not have internet access in these remote locations. But, we have a Single Sideband Radio, technology from the 1930's which is our best option for communicating. We can send/receive very short text messages with this very old technology. It is comforting to know that, in remote locations, we can use old technology to stay in contact with loved ones. We also use the SSB radio to download weather information.
At midnight we suddenly awaked with a start. The nightly Coromuel arrived with the goal of doing serious damage. We had constant winds in the mid to upper 30's and gusts to 49.7knots! We had no sleep until about 6 am when the wind gave us a break. The boat was like a roller coaster even though we were protected from serious waves. As it was, with small fetch, we had breaking waves in the bay. The waves knocked over our sun tea jug and broke it. Fortunately, our trusty anchor held and we didn't drag an inch. Our friend, Engle on SV See Adler was on our lee, so we would have had a collision if we dragged. One of the boats did drag its anchor. Fortunately, they awakened and moved before they blew onto the beach. Willful Simplicity, mentioned in a previous post, were hit by a 60 knot wind called a Chubasco, and ended up on the beach. Fortunately, it was a sandy beach and there were pulled off without serious damage.
SV Susie (George and Janet) lost her dinghy. The painter chaffed and the dinghy took off. They broadcast the missing dinghy on both the SSB and VHF. Soon another La Paz cruiser spotted the dinghy on their way to Caleta Partida and snagged it for Susie, who immediately left to retrieve it. All cruisers know that they are only a moment away from an adverse event, so it is a close community that helps each other out without question.
I don't think we'll do anything today except sleep and take it easy. I couldn't hear the Sonrisa weather report today, but Susie relayed it to us. A change in winds to the northwest is reported. I got another forecast calling for WSW - 6 to 8 knots. So - who knows? Could it be true? Maybe we'll sleep tonight.

It's a Wonderful Life - On Adesso!
