Goats on the Loose

15 April 2013 | Bahia Agua Verde, BCS, Mexico
Early our first morning, we heard the sound of bells. Our first thought was that several angels were receiving their wings (from the movie - "It's a Wonderful Life"), but it turned out to be a herd of about 30 goats clambering on the cliffs above the anchorage. We had read about a goat dairy in the bay, so we went to the Maria's tienda and asked about "queso de cabra" (goat cheese). As if on cue, the herd of goats came walking down the dirt road to the dairy. We bought a small piece of goat cheese to try it out. It was absolutely marvelous! The next day we went to the same tienda and said that we wanted to buy some more goat cheese. In moments a "mature" woman arrived with a kilo of fresh goat cheese. She was the goat herder/dairy farmer/cheesemaker and her product is popular with both locals and cruisers. We paid 50 pesos (about $4) for a kilo (2.2 pounds) of her product. No hormones added to this milk. The goats graze in the desert all day, without supervision, and return, bells ringing, in the afternoon for the evening milking.
We had another active night on anchor, with 15-25 knot winds all night, every night. We are beginning to get accustomed to the windy conditions and sleep reasonably well. But a nice calm night without multiple awakenings to check the anchor would be a much appreciated treat.

It's a Wonderful Life - on Adesso!
