Serendipity takes us north - NC to MD
07 May 2018
Apr 29 - May 7th - Short Stays & Short Stories as we travel north.
Apr 29 - 7:30 AM and we leave Oriental marina - thank you Leland for making our departure a smooth one. Well today we travel by boat the farthest north she has been since 2015. It is a little rough traveling the Neuse River and stuff on the boat gets rearranged but all is good. Arrive at Belhaven Marina at 2:38 PM - they actually have huge fenders attached to their docks.
Apr 30 - One night at Alligator River Marina - fried chicken & fried okra at the service station diner - we have done before.
May 1 - We travel the Albemarle Sound and it is rough - quite a few boats heading the same direction even a cruise ship "Independence". This time we travel the Virginia cut instead of the dismal swamp and our next stop is Coinjock Marina @ Coinjock, NC. Boats are lined up on the dock - including a cruise ship. Dinner at Coinjock Marina Restaurant - yummy!
May 2 - Today is time for our first lock going north at Great Bridge Lock - very nice, clean padded lock and only lifted about 6 inches. Wow are we really back to Mile 0 on the ICW at Norfolk, Virginia - busy, busy and lots of navy ships - very impressive. At 3:35 PM we arrive at Bluewater Yachting Center, Hampton, Virginia.
May 3 - A day spent travelling the Chesapeake and we actually get to shut off the engine and sail for a short time - 7 knots but it is just too rough and the sails are flapping. At 12:07 PM we are at Cape Charles Town Harbor, Cape Charles, VA
May 4 - AT 6:30 AM we leave Cape Charles - anticipating more rough waters later in the day. Our Captain is good because it was not smooth sailing for several hours but at 11:57 PM we arrive at Chesapeake Boat Basin, Kilmarnock, VA and it is time for a pump-out and fuel. I think it is funny that we are docked between 2 boats - Mary Jane and Ginseng - that's my Serendipity! We plan to visit Guy & Cindy's boat later and take a few photos.
May 5 - Pajama & movie day on the boat- our today's pick is "Eddie the Eagle" - an awesome true story.
May 6 - It is really foggy but the Captain says we have to leave Kilmarnock, VA at 5:47 AM because he thinks the Chesapeake will get rougher later in the day. We travel in extreme fog but we are ahead of rough water. We pass the mouth of the Potomac, and at 1:50 PM, we are in Maryland at Zahniser's Yachting Center - very nice place. So far we have made good time traveling the Chesapeake. Not sure yet where we will end up before we leave Serendipity and travel on land again but I feel confident that my Captain is carefully monitoring the conditions that affect our travel.
May 7 -At 6:10 AM we head to Annapolis. Not smooth - we lose our light globe from the top of the mast again but this time it is gone for good. Our Captain decides to make a change in plans so we stop at Knapp's Narrows Marina & Inn on Tilghman Island, Maryland. This is actually a very nice stop. We make a short trip into town for lunch where they are having whiskey and wine tasting at 11:30 AM (love it ). I love exploring the Chesapeake and the quaint little towns surrounding this waterway. Bob really needs to be a waterway tour guide.
