Flight of Aghavni

a Topjian family traveling journey

Pumice

Sailing through the Bligh Waters separating the 2 main islands of Fiji; Vanua Levu and Viti Levu. A glorious "champagne sailing" day with 20 knots on a broad reach. Aghavni was in full stride, with a bone in her teeth, flying along averaging 8 knots all day as we crossed through the reefs.

Photo is one of the pumice fields of floating rocks from an underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga, over 500 miles away! We have been tracking it and are collecting samples for a research project in Australia (hopefully!). We deliberately waited a few weeks for the pumice fields and larger rocks that could damage the boat go through ahead of us over the past few weeks. Sailors have been providing updates through local radio nets.

We also hooked 4 fish today but only landed 2, as the other big boys shredded our lures!

We decided to skip a stop and push on to cover just about 80 miles before sunset. We don't sail at night in Fiji due to uncharted reefs and hazards. Plus, the scenery is so beautiful, it is worth the daylight!

Seriously, an incredible day on the water. Thank you, Lord!
