29 July 2014 | Mali Losinj
The glitzy glamour of our magical days in Venice have long since faded and it is now a sort of reversed Cinderella story… princess roaming Venice with two young explorers and a romantic gallant duke, to scrubbing deckhand with two bilge rats and one very Mediterranean husband on board a teaky leaky, china chicken, Taiwan turkey…Aigle D’Or! But let me rewind a couple of days.
We left Venice in a blur of luggage which had to be hurtled on and off the tronchetto in what seemed to be peak hour… We boarded the San Frangisk, the Ferry which was going to carry us on the final leg of our journey to Mali Losinj, a pretty port on the island of Losinj in the Kvarner Gulf, home of the best red prawns in the world(one week later I still haven’t tried them)
We were unprepared. Not only did we get a shock that the trip was to be a 5 hour one but what was worse was that we did not have any food with us so we resigned ourselves to being doomed to eat the bad crisps which were being sold on board. What was more painful was the memory of all the Panini and pizza al taglio which we so nonchalantly walked by a few hours before. The trip was a long one.
We chugged alongside the quay in Mali and were met by an extremely excited and excitable Tomislav who was to be our landlord for the next few days. He literally squashed us together with our luggage and another couple into his friends taxi and led the way on his motorino. The apartment was comfortable. Small but clean with a lovely terrace. We were starving so we walked down to the centre for a snack before falling into bed in a deep and dreamless sleep.
