Fire in Marmaris!
25 September 2009
There was a lot of excitement at Yacht Marine this morning, when a large ( roughly 100') sailing yacht anchored a couple of hundred feet off the marina caught fire. We were quite alarmed when we first saw the large clouds of black smoke billowing over the docks and then saw a mast come down. It was interesting to see everyone rushing toward the scene of the fire in much the same way that people probably rushed to the waterfront to see the burning ships on the day of the Halifax explosion. It's now been burning for over three hours and there is little left but a blackened hulk. How sad for the owners, who apparently had recently had it completely refurbished. Although it was not close enough to our dock to pose any danger to Aisling, we now have quite a bit of soot on the decks and were sprayed with salt water about eight times, as the helicopter water bomber flew directly overhead. I guess we'll need to wash the decks just one more time after all.
