The Great Escape!
22 May 2011 | Chicago Airport
Friday was a momentous day for us. At 1.30 in the afternoon, Rick signed the papers that finalized the sale of his business to his second-in-command, Gary Fullerton. After thirty seven years running the retail clothing business that he started with his former partner Richard Dube during their last year of university, it may take a while for him to get his head around the magnitude of this change. He insists he is not "retiring", but surely, having a bit more time to sail, relax and enjoy life can't be a bad thing!
The timing couldn't have been better...or tighter. We've had our May 22nd flights to Istanbul booked for several weeks, but when this deal started to come together, we wondered if we would have to delay our departure. Rick emailed my brother James (also our lawyer) to ask if everything could be pulled together quickly enough for us to catch our flight. The three-word answer arrived on Rick's Blackberry within minutes..."Yes We Can!" Unbelievably, everything fell into place in the nick of time. Last night, with bags mostly packed, we took a break to savour the moment and drink a toast from a bottle of Veuve Cliquot. (My brother doesn't kid around when he buys a bottle of champagne!)
We're currently in the lounge in Chicago's O'Hare airport waiting for a flight to Frankfurt. So far, we've been enroute for over 10 hours and all our progress has been in the wrong direction. Such is the fate of those who travel using Aeroplan points. We already been on two flights, not counting the "flight of old world whites" we tried at Vino Volo in the Philly airport. (Very nice, and who would expect to find smoked salmon croustades in an airport?)
Next up, a few days of touring Istanbul and then onward to Marmaris and Aisling. Are we excited? Yes We Are!
