It Comes From the Left and it Comes From the Right!

29 May 2013
Bonnie
We’re beginning to wonder if we’ll ever leave the dock. We hadn't planned to leave before the end of May anyway, but suddenly it’s the 29th and we’re not ready.

Mind you, a lot of things have been checked off the to-do list. New holding tank installed. New batteries purchased and connected. New life raft purchased and in place. Outboard motor serviced. Staysail furling gear installed. Genoa recut to make a #1 Yankee that can be flown with the staysail. Sails on. Decks scrubbed. Deck and lines washed…and washed again…and again…..

It’s the wind, you see. It’s blown ferociously, day after day; week after week. We get the odd break, and then it starts all over again.

Before Hans and Dani arrived, we gave the boat a thorough cleaning, as one does when one is expecting guests (and especially guests whose own boat is always spotless). Before they had even set foot onboard, the wind piped up and coated everything with a new layer of dust. Out came the dusting cloths and the hose and we cleaned everything again. The cycles of cleaning followed by big winds seemed to go on and on. The worst was about ten days ago, when we had a fierce wind from the east that coated our decks and lines in a thick layer of red dust mixed with salt. It worked its way below decks, leaving gritty dust on every surface. When the wind finally moderated, Rick spent an afternoon hosing everything off, but within a few hours it seemed like it was as bad as ever. We finally realized it was blowing off the upper sections of the rigging, which we had no hope of reaching with the hose. A good rainstorm is sorely needed, but even if that happens, it’s likely to carry more red dust with it.

One night last week, it blew sustained in the 40’s with gusts over 50 knots in the marina. We’d intended to go into town for dinner with Nancy and Bob, but a walk into town in those conditions didn’t really appeal to anyone. So we decided to cook onboard instead. What fun, cooking pasta with the boat heeled over as though we were sailing!

Yesterday, the weather was particularly odd. In the morning, it piped up from the east at about 30 knots. By early afternoon, it was dead calm, but an hour later, it was blowing over 20 knots from the west. On the dock, Mario the mechanic waved his arms in exasperation. “It comes from the left, then it comes from the right!” he said. He assures me that this is not at all “normale” for this time of year. Cold comfort for anyone hoping to do a passage.

Maybe we’ll be lucky. Our new wind generator will be installed early next week, and maybe a perfect wind will follow. I think we’ll wait to see which direction it comes from before we decide our destination!

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
