Season 8 Episode 2 Easter in Sicily

22 April 2014 | Marina di Ragusa
Bonnie
Week two. We're still at the dock, but making good progress with our chores. Some of the stainless steel remains a bit rusty, but the sails are all on. A diver has been booked to clean the growth off our propeller on Wednesday. If Aeolus smiles on us, we'll be on our way to the Strait of Messina by the weekend. I must admit, it will be hard for me to drag myself away from Marina di Ragusa. "You never want to leave" Rick says with a smile. Which is only partly true, but he does have a point. There's always a temptation to linger in nice places, and this is very nice place. We're also really enjoying the company of good friends, including a wonderful dinner on Deep Blue last week and another lively Friday night music event in the marina bar followed by pizza for dinner. The weather has been quite cool, and blotchy brown rain landed on our decks this morning, but some of the sunsets have been glorious. I'm happy that we've decided to bring the boat back here for (one last) winter, but unfortunately some of our friends will not be here when we return in October.

Being in Sicily for Easter was an interesting experience. Although we did not go to Ragusa Ibla to see any of the processions (and we definitely should have) I did go a Mass at the church in the square on Easter morning. As usual, I was running behind schedule. Not entirely my fault -Rick needed help getting the jib on the forestay and I'm just a girl who can't say no. Consequently, I arrived in the square on the stroke of 11 a.m. to find that the church was overflowing and the crowd was spilling onto the steps. So I stood at the door for a full hour, mainly in a somewhat bewildered state, since I am not Roman Catholic and my Learn Italian with Michel Thomas CDs didn't cover religious terms. But the music was beautiful and the story is always the same. "Resurrezione" was easy to figure out, as was "pace" during the exchange of peace. My extensive experience at restaurants and meat counters helped with "Agnello di Dio". But then my mind started wandering to thoughts of roast lamb, which most of the Sicilians around me would surely be having for dinner. Instead, we cooked Jennifer and Mark's recipe for chicken pieces roasted with potatoes, lemon and capers and invited our friends Rimmer and Toos for dinner. We had a lovely evening exchanging information about anchorages in Greece and mainland Italy.

The next morning, Rick sent Rimmer and Toss a file with bookmarks of Greek anchorages that could be added to Google Earth. At the bottom of Rick's standard email signature is the John Masefield quote "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by." They wrote back "Did you know that John Masefield actually hated sailing?" And thus another idol's feet of clay are exposed! But the quote will stand, because the words evoke beautiful memories of passages under the stars and speak to Rick about the mystery of what "could" be. It turns out that John Masefield is a very interesting guy, even though he did not like sailing. Check out the Wikipedia article.

One nice change in the marina is that there are a lot more children than there were last year, and they seem to be having a wonderful time together. An Easter egg hunt was organized, and reportedly was a great success. If the eggs were the size of the ones in most of the displays I've seen, they must have been a bit difficult to hide! The photo above really doesn't do them justice, because you can't get a sense of the scale. Some are well over a foot high.

To be truthful, I have little of interest to report. Tasks like doing the laundry can take up most of a day, since this involves walking over half a kilometer to the laundry room. This week the job was particularly irksome. I put my laundry in and went for a walk to the bakery, where I finally learned how to order soft bread (the word for soft in this context is "morbido", in case you're wondering). Patting myself on the back over this small success, I returned to the laundry room in high spirits only to discover that my load had gone through an entire 45 minute cycle without water. Argh!!! Some days I think I miss my washer and dryer more than my family (just kidding Mom :-) ) When I finally got everything washed and dried, I realized that I'd washed a big load of Rick's things and forgotten most of my own.

Easter isn't quite over, because we still haven't cracked open the monster Easter Egg that I couldn't resist buying at the Eurospar. I'm saving it, and my entire collection of tiny Lindt bunnies, for the 10-hour sail to Siracusa.

If there's any consolation to leaving Marina di Ragusa behind, it's that our first stop will be at one of our favourite towns. Hopefully, the nice man in the lavenderia beside the bridge will finish our laundry!

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
