Pozzuoli

04 June 2014
With so much to write about, the question is where to resume the story. Back in Pozzuoli I suppose, where our ugly plumbing issues had finally been sorted out by a knight in shining armour named Antonio. It had taken ten smelly hours for him to get it done, and he must surely have been thinking "Of all the gin joints boatyards in all the towns in all the world, they had to walk into mine...". But he is cheerful and friendly throughout the job, even taking time to suggest things we should do while we are in Pozzuoli. He obviously loves to travel too, and has learned English in order to visit North America. At the top of his recommended list of local sights is the Solfatara volcano, where the steaming fumaroles give evidence to the fact that the Phlegraean fields area is one of the most geologically unstable places on earth. We can also indulge in a hot mud bath there, and perhaps erase a few of our wrinkles. But with only one afternoon at our disposal, we opt instead to explore the historic core of Pozzuoli and visit the Flavio Amphitheatre.

Our first stop is the Temple of Serapide, named for a statue of the Egyptian god Serapis that was found in the ruins. In fact, it was not a temple but the town food market in Roman times, when Pozzuoli was the largest port in the Tyrrhenian sea and a second home to the Roman aristocracy, who built luxurious villas here. Seismic activity has taken its toll. The ground level here continuously raises and lowers, such that the temple you see below was submerged in 5.7 metres of sea water during the 11th century, but rose again to it's current position. You can still clearly see the outlines of the buildings of the market.

Now for the amphitheatre. But without a decent map, finding it proves to be a bit of a challenge. The tourist office is closed, but a helpful man in the office next door photocopies a map for us and walks to the bridge with us to point out the road. But the photocopier must have been almost out of toner, and our map is so faint that it is hard to read. We stop to ask directions from a young man and he jokes that we have a Roman map as he points toward a narrow set of steps that will take us to the amphitheatre. I am not sure if he means that the map looks like it is two thousand years old, or if this is a jibe at present day Rome.

The Flavian amphitheatre is one of the largest in the Roman world and the third largest in Italy, with seating for over 20,000 spectators. It does not compare with the Coliseum in size or grandeur, but our experience here is memorable for the fact that we have the place almost entirely to ourselves. The holes now covered by the grates once housed devices to lift performers, gladiators and wild beasts into the arena. The underground areas are extensive and well preserved.

Eventually, a group of French students on a school trip interrupt our solitude, and we make our way back to the square next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie for a birra. The church is being repaired, apparently because it too has been affected by the seismic activity. According to our Lonely Planet, it is currently sinking at a rate of about 2 cm a year. Even after the beer, we don't feel even the slightest bit of movement. Thankfully.

On the way home, we do a little food shopping. We will eat well here!

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
