From Port to Port

16 August 2007 | Nazare
Bonnie
The past few days have been so action-packed that there hasn't been much time to write. On the weekend, we toured Porto (Oporto) for two full days, walking up and down the steep hills until our legs ached. In spite of our brisk pace, we would have needed an additional two days- or two months- to properly complete the tour.

Porto is a city with many faces. In the central area of the city, the Avenida dos Aliados leads to an attractive square and town hall. This district has up-market cafes, Art Nouveau-style buildings and a well-developed business area. The Ribeira section, along the slope of the river, is more interesting. The heritage sites are scattered haphazardly in a maze of derelict warehouses and grimy row houses with lines of washing strung on balconies. Along the riverbank, the tourist business is in full force, with tourists of almost every nationality, picturesque river boats, a caf or ice cream stand at every two paces and a close-up view of the Dom Luis 1 bridge. Across the river is the Vila Nova de Gaia district, where port wine is aged and blended.

Armed with Rick's never-fail internal compass and our handy city guide (with the locations of the "must sees" thoughtfully circled by the nice girl in the tourism office) we got around reasonably well. We passed through some fairly seedy-looking passages in the Ribeira district, and I won't get into a discussion of the smells. We saw some interesting sights as we made our way through the alleys- a landlady dropping a key on a long rope to her tenant below- and promptly hoisting it back up when the door was opened - sardines being cooked on a brazier- but I wouldn't recommend following our route after dark. Fortunately, before darkness fell we had found a little caf on the Avenida where we heard a beautiful fado performance.

There are too many heritage sights to describe, but the Palacio da Balsa, Se cathedral and the church of Sao Francisco were stunning. (The church of Sao Francisco was originally constructed in the 13th century as a simple Franciscan monastery, but it is no longer simple- the interior is decorated with 200 kgs of gold donated by virtuous Portuguese families.) On Sunday afternoon we also did a tour of the Calem port lodge which, happily, ended with a tasting.

On Monday we sailed (read motored) ten hours to Figuera da Foz. The marina was expensive at 46 euros, but well set-up. After Rick completed the usual round-robin with Portuguese officials (marina, immigration and customs-even when entering from another Portuguese port of call) we tried out the marina restaurant, which was reasonably priced and reasonably good. On Tuesday we sailed (ahem, motored) seven hours to Nazare. This marina (run by a British couple, Mike and Sally) is small, less expensive and very friendly. Yesterday, we woke to heavy rain and were happy to be safely tucked in here. The rain stopped by early afternoon, but the winds have become high and the huge breakers rolling in on the beach are a bit daunting. Based on the weather forecast, it looks like we'll be here for a few days, so we'll do some land-based exploring. Today's agenda- Alcobaca and Batalha.

All the best from Aisling 1

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
