Tall Tales and Temple Trekking

Nazare has been the ideal place to wait for a weather window. There is a friendly little community of cruisers at the marina, and the town itself is charming, though a bit unusual. Nazare is a traditional fishing village, but is also a bustling little resort town. In the marina, we hear sirens wailing at all hours. According to our Imray guide, these sirens announce the arrival of fishing boats with catches to be auctioned. (This is probably true, since we heard no sirens during the two days that the seas were too high for the boats to go out.) A large section of the Nazare beach is laid out with drying racks for fish. Each fish is so beautifully split that some look like works of art! Older women hawk trays of the dried fish beside the walkway that runs along the beach. Most of these women are traditionally dressed, with wraparound headscarves, short full skirts (with petticoats),aprons and shawls. Occasionally a pair of navy blue kneesocks with black oxford-style shoes will be thrown in for good measure. This manner of dress may soon be a thing of the past, since the younger women (i.e the ones under sixty) don't seem to dress this way.

The old town sits high above beautiful multi-coloured cliffs, at the north end of the long sandy beach. Where the cliffs meet the blue-green sea, the surf crashes against the "Frade de Mar" in a tower of white spray that is several stories high. Against this backdrop is another "sea"- of individual, four-sided beach tents (complete with verandas) that protect the multitudes of vacationing Europeans from the sun.

In the newer section of the town, there are dozens of cafes, lots of shops and wall-to-wall tourists. This week, there's even a small circus in town (Circo Chen). On every corner, women sit holding signs (in Portuguese and French) advertising rooms for rent. Many of these women are dressed in the costumes described above, and they call out like barkers and eat ice cream while chatting with their friends. Others sell peanuts, cashews, pistachios and figs (measured in little square wooden trays priced at two or three euros) tiny cooked crabs, or the delicious soft, salted yellow beans that are served with beer in the cafes here. The town market has a great selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a huge selection of fish. Rick bought some fresh "perca" there and cooked it for dinner. We don't really know what perca is, but it tasted a lot like the wreckfish/cherne/turbot we enjoyed so much in the Azores.

Nazare is an easy busride from numerous historic sites. Yesterday morning we visited the 15th century Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitoria in Batalha- known as "Battle Abbey" because it was built to commemorate a famous victory over a Castilean claimant to the Portuguese throne. The abbey is awe-inspiring, both inside and outside. The area around the cathedral has been preserved to allow a full appreciation of the building's proportions and exquisite carvings. The interior is breathtaking- long corridors with high vaulted ceilings- and the tomb of Henry the Navigator sits in the beautiful "Founders Chapel", along with those of his parents Joao 1 and Philippa of Lancaster.

In the afternoon we visited the Monosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaca, about a thirty minute bus ride from Batalha. It would be impossible to say which of the two cathedrals is more beautiful- but the Alcobaca monastery certainly has some intriguing history. According our Lonely Planet guide, the monks there were considered by some to be shocking gluttons- (let's say gourmands, since we ourselves are not blameless in this respect!). The river was channeled through the kitchen to provide a continual source of fresh fish. Within the church are the tombs of Dom Pedro and Dona Ines-their tragic love story has a bit of a gruesome twist-worth looking up on the net if you enjoy stories of romance, murder and revenge.

By the end of the day we knew the true meaning of the word "footsore". There is still much that we could see from here, but tomorrow seems to be the best day for good sailing weather, so we're off to Cascais (just outside Lisbon) at 6 a.m.

Update: Arrived in Cascais today at 1730- a rather exhilarating sail, and we are happy to be here!

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
