What about the wine

04 January 2008
Rick
Why would we wander without a small "copa de vino" to wash down the great food? The wine has been a treat we have enjoyed, perhaps too much, along the way. Neither Bonnie nor I are wine experts. We just know what we like and we have had some great guidance especially from our close friend and crewmate, Sommelier Wally Fraser and from various waiters in restaurants we have visited during our journey. We have also learned that even though we may really like a particular bottle of wine, that does not mean it is great!..... Go figure...... At home Sauvignon blancs, Aligotes, Soaves, Pinot Grigios and other white wines that are dry and crisp are the ones we gravitate to. I find the tannins in reds can be a bit hard on the head the next morning, even if it is only one glass.

The Azores - Portugal
The wines from the Island of Pico in the Azores were a treat. The vineyards in Pico are a World Heritage site; that must mean something. Azorean wine was on most royal tables in Europe until a fungus destroyed the grapevines. They have been working hard to bring their industry back and we can report they are making great progress! Jack Tyler told me, "No matter how much it might seem, the quantity of excellent Azores wine you put aboard will not be enough..." It turns out he was right-ours was gone in no time, even though we were trying really hard to save some for our arriving guests to try.

Knowing us well, Wally had recommended that we try the Portuguese Vino Verdes. Vino Verdes are green wines that comes from grapes harvested before full ripeness. They are dry, crisp and have a slight effervescence. As usual, Wally was right- vino verde was the one in Portugal! Hard to believe when the first ones we found were only 1.19 Euros per bottle. As the trip progressed we discovered Gazella, Muralhas and finally(our favourite) Alverinho- all excellent Vino Verdes though a little more expensive at approx 3 Euros per bottle. At the Chamber of Commerce Palace in Porto, we tried several wines and ports and purchased a nice bottle of 2005 Muxagat Branco (a fruity Douro wine). We also enjoyed Lello, another delicious dry and crisp Portuguese white from the Douro Valley.

In Porto, there was lots to be learned about port, of course. We took two Port tours in Porto and when I told the guide we came to Portugal for the Port she zeroed in on us and gave us quite few to try. Thank God the British came to Portugal!

Spain
The wines from Ribiero and Albarino in the Galician area were a treat. Further south Rueda wines were also a great find and the cavas .......... ah, the cava's. Most wines we bought ran around 1.50 to 4.00 euros per bottle.

While in Granada, we found a great urban-hip restaurant called Restaurante Ermita, near the cathedral, with tapas creations that made your mouth water. The waiter there spoke good English and was very helpful with suggestions of wines we should try-Vina Cantosun from Rueda, Alvorina Calvietes, Senoria da Nevada (a cabernet-merlot blend) and Bara Bedilo from Castel de San Diego. This waiter rolled his eyes when speaking of Riojas, which are the predominant Spanish wines available in the Canada. Others we met also seemed to be steering us to new and upcoming (to them at least) wines from more obscure vintners and regions.

When Doug arrived, he brought some excellent Spanish red Reservas and Grand reservas from Rioja- so scratch what those waiters said! Even I, who have trouble findings reds I like, was captivated by these Rijoa's-and guess what ? I felt fine the next morning!

More Spanish wines (and French, Italian and who knows...) lie ahead- we will keep you posted

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
