The Elusive Balearics

14 April 2008 | Ibiza City, Ibiza
Bonnie
As the daily gale warnings continued, our hopes that the four of us could sail to Ibiza together began to fade. When a weather window that allowed us to sail directly from Cartagena to Ibiza opened up for Saturday, Wally and Martha began making plans to rent a car and travel overland back to Nice. Meanwhile, we continued to enjoy the sights and sounds of Cartagena. Each morning, we woke to the sound of the reveille from the military base and fell asleep to the chimes of the clock tower in the square. We visited the Augusteum, an old Roman temple that was discovered below the modern-day streets of Cartagena. A tour of the Civil War Museum gave us some insight into the history of the Spanish Civil War, and the hardships faced by the citizens of Cartagena (which was the last stronghold of the Republicans). The city has surprises around every corner: a well-preserved Roman road is visible under glass beside an obscure side-street; unexcavated ruins lay just steps away from the main shopping district. The scope of the restoration and renovation being undertaken is huge- I hope we can return on our way home to see the next stage.

Inspiration struck over cervezas at our favourite little bar/restaurante, "La Tartana" -if Wally and Martha delayed their flight by two days, they could sail to Ibiza and take the ferry back to Barcelona. A quick back-of-an-envelope calculation suggested that this would actually be less expensive than the overland option. A plan was forming

To our great relief, Saturday's weather forecast was right on the money. We hoisted the sails exactly at our planned departure time of noon and sailed away in 15 knots of wind from the WSW. The rough seas disturbed us not a whit, since our rocky berth in the Cartagena marina had provided us with bullet-proof sea-legs. Blue water and blue skies by day and clear starry skies and a bright half-moon at night provided an unforgettable passage. The tanker "Tor Loire" even provided a bit of drama by bearing down on us at warp speed. Naturally, this happened while both men were asleep below, the wind had freshened to nearly twenty knots and the only possible course chance required a jibe. After our pulse rates returned to normal, we marveled about how strange it was that the only boat we saw on our entire watch happened to be on a collision course with ours.

Watching the sun rise behind Isla Formentera was one of life's perfect little moments. The jagged contours of Isla Vedra were already familiar to us from countless tourist photos, and our cameras were clicking furiously as we tried to capture the stunning views of the wooded hillsides and the old town on our entrance into Ibiza City Harbour. We had sailed 145 miles in 22 hours, with only a little bit of help from the motor- not bad for us. During the passage, we crossed the prime meridian so we have now officially entered the eastern world.

At our first stop (Marina Ibiza Nueva) the price of a berth was 70 euros a night, electricity included- and this is low season! The Ibiza Club Nautico at the head of the harbour has a bit of a wash from the ferries, but the price of 31 euros seems like a great deal by comparison!

We first talked about sailing to Ibiza nine years ago, on our first trip to Spain. There are three world heritage sites here on Ibiza- I wonder if we can see them all before Wally and Martha have to leave?

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
