Wally World, Palma

(These are the Wallys..... )

The gale and near gale warnings seem to be coming with too regular frequency. Having spent three days in Santa Eulalia hunkered down while listening to the wind generator howling and vibrating when the speed brake came on, we knew it was time to get out of there but probably not just then.

During the near gale, we had sustained winds in the 30-38 knot range and gusts into the mid forties for most of a 24 hour period. It blew like stink, as they say back home. We were comforted to know that we were safe in the marina with free wifi. A German couple, we had first met in Cartagena, were not so lucky. They ended up with their boat floundering on the beach after their anchor let go during the blow. They were pulled off by some guy in a big cigarette boat. I had wondered during the storm where that cigarette boat was going when it was blowing so hard. We did not have a chance to talk to them after the incident but their boat looked Ok from a distance. We were told by the Marina staff that if you anchored over in the west of the bay at Santa Eulalia the holding was poor in sand with pebbles though you did appear to be more protected from the westerly wind. Closer to the marina entrance, though more exposed, the holding is much better in sand.

We were itching to get to Palma, Mallorca and the forecast for the next day looked reasonable with wind from the SW at force 5-6. Though we heard another securite', for a gale warning, it applied to the following day. We had a one day window before us, so under beautiful blue skies and light winds we powered out of the marina into a surprisingly gentle swell at 8:30am. For the first five hours the wind was light, so we motor sailed up the south coast of Ibiza. It is a rugged island on this side with towering cliffs and rocky, pine covered islands offshore. The first part of the trip was busy with boats in the channel between the two islands zipping along at anywhere from 20-32 knots and most seemed to be directly on our track or aiming for us. The AIS was a great help and we were able to bob and weave our way through. If you sailors don't have AIS on your list yet, you should. We now find ourselves relying on it more than the radar for crossing situations.

As the breeze picked up Bonnie went for a nap and I was able to cut the engine and sail. It was wonderful. Mallorca started to show itself through a fairly thick haze and the first site was the distant mountain called Puig Mayor at about 4700'. We made the turn at Punta Cautius and into the Bay. There was a regatta on at the yacht club and I've never seen so many Wally Yachts in one place. Some of them had to be 80-100'long and they looked like oversize full race day sailors to me. It was neat to watch with chutes flying. As we closed the harbor at 6:00pm, we dropped the sails in about 20 knots of breeze and motored into the most amazing spectacle of sailboats and power yachts I have ever seen. It seemed like there were thousands of them at nine different marinas and yacht clubs. The harbor was abuzz with the breeze and boats going hither and yon. All the Wallies were trying to back into their slips with their tenders zooming around to help. The Swan 65s and such looked like the little guys here. We think Aisling cut a nice picture motoring in with our Canadian flag flying and we received lots of friendly waves from others on the water, even if we were one of the little, little guys.

We had neglected to make a reservation and were promptly told by the Real Club Nautica (The King of Spain's club) and by our second choice, Club de Mar, that they were full. On one level, I was pleased because Club de Mar was 125 Euros per night. The wind was still blowing and we didn't know what to do so we motored further in and saw ahead of us, near Viva Yacht Charters, a finger pier with an Ovni on one side and the other side free. So we just pulled in and tied up until we could figure out what to do next. The people on the Ovni told us they had stayed there last night and although the police came by and told them to leave the next morning they thought we could probably do the same thing. Perfect, right downtown and about a three minute walk from the cathedral and the Old Town with all the restaurants and bars and it's free, at least for one night!

As Lonely Planet says: Palma is ".. an attractive blend of palm lined boulevards and cobbled laneways, Gothic churches and baroque palaces, designer bars and slick boutiques. It's a stylish city that buzzes by day and sizzles by night." We can't wait to explore.

All the best from Aisling I

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
