Tunisia Bound.... almost

26 March 2009 | We are in Canada, Aisling is still in Monastir, Tunisia
Rick
16 days and counting. Where did the last 6 months go? Probably where everybody's savings in the stock market went...... down some hidden hole. We have been frantically working and trying to extricate ourselves from our Halifax lives. Our parents seem to be doing well and business is coming along (looking for wood to knock on....) Our son has agreed to look after our house while we are gone and then get his own apartment when we return and our daughter is moving back home from Toronto, now that she is becoming a full-fledged lawyer! So....... things are changing and mostly for the better. I think the game is about even!

I have been filling hockey bags with spares and other gear, as there are no chandleries in Monastir. I have bilge pumps, fans (it's hot over there), aluminum bits, shackles, a fender, floating line, hats, light weight clothing, STP oil, dextron III transmission fluid, guide books, pilot books, charts (electronic and paper) novels (almost enough books for a library), replacement stereo speakers, a multimeter, insect repellant, medications, toilet paper (don't ask), a come-a-long, LED lights to replace every light on the boat :-), a broiler element, water filter, anodes, glue, Tervis tumblers, ant traps, manual wash machine (human powered), CO2 detector, pad locks, saw, twine..... and believe or not the list is still growing. This should give you an idea of what it is like keeping a boat over there. And this is just my list. You should see Bon's. The bad news is that we have to lug all this stuff from Halifax to Tunis by way of Toronto, Zurich, Rome and Frankfurt. And yes, we are flying from Rome back to Frankfurt on the way to Tunis. A bit of advice- don't fly points unless you are an explorer at heart and have the stamina for a very long journey.

Once in Tunis we have to drive 150km to Monastir. First, we will spend a couple of days in Tunis and do a quick tour of Carthage, which is just outside of town. Even though there is not much there to see, it is a bit of a pilgrimage and we have to see it. I guess there is not much left, though, In 146BC, after laying siege to the city for 3 years during the 3rd Punic war, the Roman not only sacked and destroyed the city, they also salted the ground so that nothing would grow there again. Apparently they were quite ticked off with the Carthaginians.

After we arrive in Monastir we will have about two weeks work to get the boat ready. I suspect it will be red with Sahara sand, and very dirty. Once it is cleaned up, we will have lots of chores to do. On the list is repair the hydraulic radar leveler, change all the engine fluids and filters, put up the sails and all the canvas, lift the boat out of the water and paint antifouling on the bottom, finally decide what to do with woodwork (varnish or not), clean the water maker, install the bilge pump, the new valve for the muffler, the fans and the speaker, tune the shrouds, up the mast to re-install the wind meter, wax the hull, grease the windlass, check the steering cables etc etc etc.......... In the midst of all this or perhaps at the end we hope to do a quick tour of the southern desert, while avoiding Al Qaeda, who supposedly lurk there. This is also where they shot much of Star Wars, the movie.

Won't be long and we'll be there. I hope "they" are right when they say a change is as good as a rest!

The plan for this year is starting to gel, at least in my mind. I suspect Bonnie will add her twists as we get going. I tend to be the forward planner and she tends to be the cruise director while we are actually underway. It works surprisingly well. First stop will be Lampedusa, a small Italian island half way to Malta, then Malta for a week to hopefully meet up with cruising friends. From there we will overnight to Syracusa and Taormona in Sicily for another week. Then it's across the straight of Messina to Calabria on the boot of Italy and NE to either Corfu or Ithaca in Greece. Then we will head south and east and through the Corinth Canal to arrive in Porto Heli by June 17th when we will fly home to Canada for 6 weeks. If all goes well we will return in late July to head east across the Aegean Sea, island hopping our way to Marmaris on the Southwest corner of Turkey, where we will leave the boat for the winter of 2009-10.

We've been missing our journaling so we'll be updating the blog regularly from now on.

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
