Alone at Last!

09 August 2009 | Tranquil Bay, Lefkada
Bonnie and Rick
We are back in the anchorage at Tranquil Bay and it's now been a week without any further sign of The Rat. We had toyed with the idea of giving The Rat a name-(Zorba? El Greco?) but nothing stuck. Dignifying such a filthy, inconsiderate creature with a name just didn't seem right. We've actually known some rats who were quite likeable, at one time we even had a couple of pet rats named Lucky and Jo Jo, but wild rats don't seem as congenial. Anyway, I can now say definitively that The Rat is gone. Hopefully we will not see his like around here again.

No one thinks about rats when they look at the idyllic photos of the Greek islands, but they seem to be a problem in this part of the world. Although they are probably equally ubiquitous in other parts of the Med (or docks in North America, come to think of it) this is our first direct experience with having one sneak aboard. Horatio seemed incredulous that a rat could have found its way onto the Vlicho dock, but we saw several on the road at the head of the bay when we were out running in the mornings. Most were dead, but one was very much alive. Getting away from the Vlicho dock as soon as possible seemed the better part of valour. Besides, it's way nicer to be at anchor.

Things could have been a lot worse. We seem to have had no damage and minimal inconvenience. Others have not been so fortunate. At dinner on Tuesday night, we met Adrian and Melanie, novice sailors who recently bought a twenty-five percent share in a syndicate boat based in Vlicho. Their sailing resume is a litany of misfortunes, including a rat infestation, a dockside accident in which Melanie injured her leg and, most recently, the loss of their propeller as they were sailing away from the Vlicho dock to begin their vacation. "I'm not sure I care for boating" Melanie confessed. Small wonder.

Tranquil Bay is a gorgeous spot. Rick has been thoroughly enjoying his daily trips to George's chandlery, where an inventory of boating supplies rivalled only by the Boat US warehouse is packed into an area the size of a small corner store. George (who tells us he was born in a room upstairs) mans the shop entirely without help, chatting amiably with customers in an impressive variety of languages. "Enough" he tells us, "You have to leave tomorrow, my friends".

He's right. We've had enough of Nidri's August crowds, and Tranquil Bay was anything but tranquil last night, with a huge party onshore that dragged on until 6 a.m. We feel asleep to the strains of disco music so loud that it even penetrated our high-quality Air Canada earplugs, but at the crack of 11 a.m. we were at our stations ready to haul up the anchor and head for Syvota. We've just had the windlass repaired, everything should have gone smoothly. But instead of the satisfying sound of chain running into the anchor locker, we heard only the same clicking sound we'd been hearing before we paid a large sum of money to get the windlass fixed. Care to guess where we have to go in order to investigate the problem? Back to the Vlicho dock.

I'm not sure I care for boating. (Just kidding.)

Cruising Notes:

Thanks Chris and Sandra (S/V Deep Blue, UK, www.sailblogs.com/member/deepblue) for the idea of separating out the "Cruising Notes". Tranquil Bay is a good anchorage, albeit busy. There is a good mud bottom with about 30-35' of depth. You can also anchor off the bank to the north and run a line to a tree ashore. The Tranquil Bay anchorage is a short dinghy ride from Nidri, with numerous supermarkets, restaurants, George's chandlery (near the middle of the main street, see above) and regular bus service to Lefkada town (stop is just across the street from George's chandlery). There is water on the Neilson Charter dock opposite the anchorage, where the owners seem happy to let cruisers fill a few jugs. (We are using about 20 litres per day with washing, drinking and showers.) The laundry ( 5 euros a load, 10 if you want it dried ) is at the south end of Nidri on the main street and can be accessed by leaving your dingy on the beach just North of Ionian Boat Assistance and Nielson Charters. The supermarket just south of the laundry has great homemade, first-press olive oil (4 Euros per litre in Aug 09, ask the staff for it) and lots of Italian specialty cheeses and meat.

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
