16 August 2018 | Christmas Cove to Seal Cove, Damariscotta River, ME
We woke to the sounds of the osprey rather than lobster boats for a change. They were busy early fishing and gathering more sticks for their nest. The rest of the cove was quiet with fog that rolled in and out giving way to small glimpses of clear blue sky.
We plan just a short trip today up the Damariscotta River to Seal Cove, so we took our time with breakfast and spent time researching stops for our travels south. We both admitted it seemed more exciting coming north, then perked up at the thought we’d try to avoid staying anywhere on the way south that we stayed coming north, so our “adventure” continues. We heard from our friends Debra and Eric today. While on at mooring at the Main Maritime Museum, the strong current wrapped the morning ball painter and chain around their keel during the night. They were up all night trying to free it, help arrived at daylight, but 6 hours of mooring chain around their keel did some damage. They are hauled at a yard in Portland now, repairs will take a week or two. We’re thankful they are ok.
We came up the river with the current. It gave us an extra knot and a half of boat speed, then at one narrow point, we picked up almost 4.5 knots.... We didn’t get too excited, we’ll have to battle it on our way back tomorrow. The cove was wider than we remembered. Without wind, it was glass calm as we entered and a lone seal swam across the channel. We motored in as far as we could go near a ledge seals like to sunbathe on, then decided to head back where the cove was wider and we might get more of a breeze, it was getting warm in the bright sunshine.
The late afternoon brought a quick thunder shower, but nothing severe. We were anchored in a very protected spot for heavy weather, luckily, things passed by quickly. Our rosemary plant contributed a twig for Lesley’s rosemary chicken dinner, it was great. Lesley must of been on a roll, she creamed me in dominos and in several rounds of a dice game. Guess I’m making morning coffee again.... Clouds headed east and stars appeared around nine, it was a pretty night in the cove.
