Alegria Around the World

Leg 2 - Santa Marta to San Blas, Panama

January 22
Todd woke up at 3:30am and we left the dock at 4:40am. After leaving the marina, the winds were high in the ocean. Made water as we were low on both sides. Very wavy, windy, rolly ride. Seasick motion - I was popping those Trader Joe's ginger chews to help my stomach. Todd did most of the watch as I could only sit up for an hour and had to lie down. Thank god for autopilot! We didn't leave Santa Marta with any other boats so we were solo. We saw some cargo ships and tankers by Cartegena but that was it. I was able to make dinner but didn't even have the stomach for it - Todd ate however.

BTW - we are doing the 280 nautical mile passage on our own (double handed, they say).

FYI - the photo is today's sunset. Looks beautiful and the waves don't look like much but they were quite huge and rolly!

I relieved Todd at 12:30am and managed to stay awake until 5am (I dosed on/off in front of the chart plotter and checked the wind speed) and Todd finally got some good sleep. Slept on and off during the day. By 9:30am, started the engines as wind died and we want to arrive during daylight. Motored the entire way. Saw dolphins 2 miles from destination. Dropped anchor at Coco Banderos between Saltair and Living the Dream at 5:30pm. Took dinghy to the beach and met up with several boats for bbq dinner. We brought marinated steak and salad and our own drinks. Got to talk to other people about their passage experience - we all had the same stories. Nice to be done with this passage!

From Wikipedia:
The San Blas Islands of Panama is an archipelago comprising approximately 365 islands and cays, of which 49 are inhabited. They lie off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, east of the Panama Canal. A part of the comarca (district) Guna Yala along the Caribbean coast of Panama, it is home to the Kuna people.

San Blas and its surrounding area is a haven for ecotourism because of its pristine environs. The area is also popular for sailing, as it is known for its beauty and lack of hurricanes.

We plan to visit cruise around the islands during our stay then we have to be in Colon, Panama on January 28.
