7. Christmas in Nassau, Bahamas

26 December 2010 | Atlantis Marina
Weather is less than hot!
We left Chub Cay early on a grey Christmas morning, heading towards Nassau in 20 knots of wind on the nose (again). As the day warmed up, the unmistakable outline of Atlantis on Paradise Island gradually came into view. Approaching the channel marker buoys after an 8 hour run, William called Nassau Harbor control on the VHF for permission to enter and we dropped sails inside the busy Port just after lunch.

We had reserved a slip at the Atlantis Hotel Marina and found ourselves beside another British boat called 'Union Jack'. There were also dozens of huge motor boats - more luxury yachts in one place than we have seen anywhere. The dock office was equipped with free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee, cakes, TV and pool table - all very luxurious for the $4/ft. marina fee.

There was just time to take the free shuttle over to the Cove and show Chris & Tony some spectacular views before returning aboard for Roast Turkey Christmas Dinner.

A severe storm warning has been issued for tomorrow so we are going to spend the day exploring this luxury resort with its three coral pink towers and 35 bars and restaurants. Chrissie & Tony want to see the underground aquarium with sculptures, caves and ruins, home for 250 marine species from dolphins to eels. The guide book says that the waterscape park requires over twenty million gallons of water to keep everything living and floating.
There's also a huge Casino - requiring only money! - so I plan to win back the marina fee on the tables tomorrow
