5. Arrival in Bimini

18 December 2010
Best lobster in town
We enjoyed a comfortable crossing, close-hauled all day in company with flying fish and dolphin. The entrance into North Bimini has changed. The old channel had silted up and the new entrance has a sand bar at the entrance not marked on the charts. We were Ok arriving around high water, but it would be impassable on a low tide.

Bimini consists of three small low lying islands in total only about 7 miles long and 200 yards wide at their narrowest point. This aerial photo of the Bimini Resort Club shows it full of boats but we found it empty and moved to Bimini's 'Big Game Resort Marina'. This has been rebuilt since our last visit and is much improved with a decent bar/restaurant on the top floor. William checked-in at the Customs/Immigration Office and paid the mandatory $300 for the Bahamian Cruising License.

Then we bought fresh lobster, still great and even more delicious @ $30 for 12 lobster tails! Buying a Bahamian SIM card for the cellphone was less successful as the Batelco office had run out the previous week and the manager had forgotten to place a new order ............only in the Bahamas.
