Thanksgiving Day

24 November 2011
Cooley's Landing, Fort Lauderdale FL
Today is Thanksgiving Day - a public holiday in the US - and the anticipation of a party in the air.

There has been lots of activity on the river since dawn - seems that everything that can possibly float is out on the water: small family boats crammed with children, dogs, food containers and wobbly sunshades; private motor yachts bristling with fishing rods, a tourist paddle steamer goes by, water taxis buzz to and fro, a flotilla of kayaks pass by, precariously low in the water, they flip side to side in the choppy wake of the boats.

We sit, watching from the quiet solitude of Alexia's cockpit and wonder what we are missing ...let's get out there!

We take a walk along the bustling river bank - the restaurants are busy and small queues already forming waiting for the next free table. Each establishment has its own special to lure customers - lobster risotto - turkey & mash - broiled grouper & fries - rib eye steak - Boston butt...... it was all tempting and the food smells made us hungry.

We noted this sign outside one particular establishment - at least any dispute over the final bill could be handled amicably.
