Creole

09 February 2012
Marsh Harbour , Gt Abaco Island
After nearly a week at anchor in the harbour we're beginning think it's time to move. Not that we really want to - we've enjoyed watching the constantly changing view at the end of 10 fathoms of chain, our strong anchor securely at home in the deep sand.

Neighbours change on a regular basis, dinghies buzz to and fro - dogs being ferrIed ashore for walks, cruisers beetling back and forth to the laundry or shops, the inter-island ferries on the go dawn til dusk.

We also have a few things to do before leaving and book into Mangoes Marina a small 29 slip marina on the town side of the harbour. Here we top up the fuel and water tanks and cycle to the grocery store a couple of miles away.

Maxwells is the place to shop. A really big supermarket a 15 minute ride from the marina. This sign in the car park reminds you to leave the trolleys behind and, for those of you who speak French, this sign is not full of spelling mistakes - it is Creole, mostly french based but with influences from various West African languages.

Many of the children here are multiligual speaking a range of English, French and Creole - for many, creole is the only language they converse in at home.
