Don't Rock Passage, Abacos
20 March 2012
Green Turtle Cay
It had been a really relaxing sail - very little up and down or side to side - which was great for another crack at catching 'the Big One'.
William has now bought a pack of ballyhoo - "you won't miss with these Sir, they're like foie gras to a mahi mahi" the bait shop owner had told him, as he handed William a chunky frozen pack of silver fish.
Maybe we should just buy the fois gras and go for it.......
These little ballyhoo baitfish aren't much bigger than sardines and are sometimes known as needle fish because of the long thin needle-like extension to their bottom lip. Having rigged the line the boys feed it out slowly behind Alexia and sit back with a beer discussing the various ways that one can cook fish.
Gill & I look at each other wondering what can be defrosted at speed for dinner...
The day unwinds and approaching Don't Rock Passage we see the enormous shape of the single hulk of rock that gives its name to the area. There it sits like a sleeping monolith in the middle of its large shallow sand bank.
Through the Whale Cay Passage on past New Plymouth and then entering the White Sound channel leading to Bluff House Marina at Green Turtle it is time to pull in the fishing line. Absolutely nothing today - not even a piece of weed.
The Marina is welcoming and friendly and tonight is the St Patrick's Day celebration - a coincidence we had overlooked until we went ashore to discover that all the drinks being served were green - even the beer.
Nothing toxic they assured us, just food colouring.
