Taking the tour

15 April 2012
Out and about in St Augustine CL
Well, there's no point in coming to St Augustine and not visiting the sights - it is just such a lovely city and one of our favorite stopping off points.

St Augustine has expanded somewhat since its discovery in the 1500's by the Spanish and the old historic quarter retains many well preserved buildings, narrow streets and a European feel.

We relocate from 'dead' boat anchorage to the city marina for ease of getting ashore but also we need to top up with diesel and use the pump-out facilities for our holding tanks.

Huge fines exist if a boat is found to be pumping toilet waste into the rivers or creeks and the Police, Dept of Fisheries, Wildlife & Environmental officers can stop and board boats at any time to ensure that seacocks are wired shut.

We have been boarded several times - must be something to do with our foreign flag flapping on the stern - and they test our system by adding a dye into the toilet pan and asking us to flush the bowl to see if anything exits into the water around the boat.

Back to sweeter smelling things!......the only way to 'do' the town in a few days is, first of all, to take the trolley bus or horse drawn carriage for a couple of hours visiting all the places of interest and having done that spend the next day revisiting one or two sites that particularly take your interest.

For us the alligator & zoological park with its nearby nature reserve is always a must. Since our last visit they have constructed 'zip' lines across the alligator lagoon and through the trees into the nature reserve. We'd cast our eyes upward as another human zoomed quietly overhead - looked like fun.

Tho' this guy seems as if he's just about had enough of highflying humans!
