OO...er! Is this mud?

25 May 2012
Buzzard Creek, South Carolina
We are in Buzzard Creek, SC after a short sail with warm breezes passing over the deck to keep us cool. With no particular destination and no schedeule to meet we opt for a short day and an off the beaten track anchorage.

Our route took us north from Beaufort into the Coosaw River leading into the Bull River where we branched right past Buzzard Island and into the Creek. It was fairly low tide and we followed up the narrowing channel for about half a mile looking for the most picturesque spot. There it was - and we dropped anchor in 15ft on a bend of the river.

Over tea next morning we were remarking on how solidly Alexia sits at anchor, especially last night as the wind had picked up and we hardly rocked at all. A peek outside revealed all - the tide had gone out more than predicted and Alexia was stuck firmly in the mud.

These fast flowing rivers cut deep channels down their centres but they can also shelve quickly. We found a few jobs to do aboard, sat patiently, drank our coffee and waited for the waters to return.
