Nunjack Cay, Northern Abacos

A walk across the island
With our US destination in mind we take the first opportunity to transit the Whale Cay passage. Stopping briefly at Green Turtle Cay and moving on to Rat Cay, off Nunjack island (also known locally as Manjack).

An almost uninhabited island - just a few people currently live there full time.

We dinghy ashore. There's a well trodden path crossing the island which leads to the ocean on the other side.

It's a lovely walk - a few houses hidden in the trees for the first half mile and then the path closes in - an old track hacked through the tall trees, soft underfoot with years of leaf fall which also hide exposed tree roots just waiting to catch your toes and tip you over.

There's an overpowering smell of rosemary - we find a massive bush and stock up on the fresh herb. A large banyan tree at the end of the path leads us onto the beach which is totally empty, endless white sand and rocky outcrops.
