4th

How we celebrated 4th of July in Kyuquot Sound Petroglyph Cove. Charley caught 2 rock fish and a lingcod for a fish fry. While cleaning the fish I stabbed Charley's thumb and had to suture it to stop the bleeding(he is just fine no big deal but you wouldn't know it). I went kayaking. A sea otter followed [...]

Cape Caution

Very smooth crossing past Cape Caution. Low swell, winds less than 5 knots and a bit of a push with the current. Left Bull Harbor about 0515 riding the last of the flood around the south part of the island and then set course to Fitz Hugh Sound.

A sea otter followed me around making sure I was not going to eat any of his crab. A black bear came down into the cove and turned over some rocks looking for crabs and 3 adult Eagels(while the younger eagle crocked her head in embarrassment) sang the Star Spangled Banner at sunset while we lite off our light sticks for our sparklers.

Hope you all had equally exciting 4th of July!!!

Will continue to enjoy Kyuquot Sound for several more days.

Left Quatsino Sound today .Currently south of Brooks Peninsula(seas calm no wind for sailing) in Scow Bay in the Bunsby Islands. 6 nights in Quatsino Sound. Julian Cove, Winter Harbor and Browning Inlet Julian Cove is approximately 15 miles into the sound close to Quatsino Narrows leading to Coal Harbor. What is amazing or somewhat annoying is Coal Harbor is only 12 miles from Port Hardy via a nice road which can be traveled with little attention to wind forecast or currents. When comparing this to all the planning needed to come via Cape Scott (ie current, wind forecast and sea height plus a 24 hour travel time to Coal Harbor from Port Hardy)one has to ask a similiar question asked of mountain climbers, why? It is easily answered with a 3 night stay in Julian Cove, a side tour of Quatsino Narrows and Varney Bay. The answer: because it's there and it is very pretty. Must mention the logging is very active and visible. Frequently hear blasting in the hills for logging road construction and the heavy machinery. this is our 3rd visit here. The first we recall clear cut to the shore. This practice has changed and the shore is protected by at least 100yd boarder between the shore and logged area. Helps with the view but most importantly should help with the restoration of the salmon runs. Sports fishing is the second industry here. Fishing lodges have replaced commercial fish canneries and small speedy fishing boats(trailable from Port Hardy via gravel road 1.5 hour trip) have replaced the commercial fishing trollers. Weather has been windy last few days but partly cloudy, short periods of rain mixed with enough sun to keep the batteries reasonably charged and the crew happy. Spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Winter Harbour secondary to gale moving across the island. We were the only cruiser at the dock until about 7pm when a 40 foot cruising troller showed up. They had come around Cape Scott in the gale. seas 12ft winds 40 to 50 knots. They were beat and frankly terrified. Said they left Bull Harbour knowing there was a gale forecast but didn't expect it to materialize so quickly. We Left them at the dock in Winter Harbour today, skipper still locked in the cabin and his wife wondering if he will ever leave Winter Harbour. We too have made strange decisions and hope their experience will delay our next one. FYI: The strange subject heading has to do with this getting posted on a blog.

Current Position: Gunboat Passage, Forit Bay Anchorage.

Fish Egg Inlet was very interesting. Spent 4 nights in Oyster Bay. Very beautiful and lot's of exploring via kayak and dingy. Plus the bonus of a very protected anchorage as a bit of wind came up on Fitz Hugh Sound.

Then to Pruth Bay!! A must see!! Check out the Hakai Beach Institute web Site for information on the mission. Hiked West Beach several times and out to North Beach. Beautiful ocean beaches with the views to go with them. Of interest to those who have hiked to North Beach before the trail has had a major upgrade with the addition of STAIRS which we call the" Stairway to Heaven"replacing the famous rope we used to scale up and down the muddy hill. Pictures to follow when we find a wifi.

Will likely hang here for a few days to wait out another SE gale(oh where is that high pressure ridge) then up to Oceans Fall.

Enjoyed the unexpected company of Jon and Roxie from Xanadu. Left them this AM as they wait for the window to round Cape Scott for trip down the west side of Vancouver Island. Just as we are passing Cape Caution we are suprised by Western Star Ilene and Rich, fellow live aboards in our marina in Anacortes. Which brought us to Green Island for a quick hello before they head further north tomorrow.

Our plan is to spend a few more days in Fish Egg Sound visiting Joe's Bay and Oyster Bay at the head of the inlet.

If you would of told us we would still be in Desolation Sound on May 22 we probably said well maybe but doubt it. It has been wonderful!!! We took in the Oyster Festival in Squirrel Cove our friends Randi and Dennis arrived in time participate in the sampling of the oysters. We will be moving north on Thursday or Friday making our way through the Broughton's, resupplying in Port McNeil then further north or around Vancouver island.

Past week weather has been quiet warm and with the gift of intermittent heavy rains to fill the water tank and water for the day. No need for a watermaker.

So far two problems with the systems of the boat. Furnace wouldn't start. Charley took the burner apart and found marble size piece of Coke. He cleaned it up and all is well and functioning normally. And a priming bulb in the diesel fuel line broke. We were at West View (Powell River) near a marine store when this occurred. Sara started the diesel and it stopped just as we were about to cast the lines. ABYC certified Diesel Mechanic Charley quickly diagnoses the problem, up to the store for supplies and we were all fixed up. WE WERE VERY HAPPY THIS HAPPENED AT THE DOCK.

We put in new refrigerator in this year. A Isotherm cold plate water cooled. The energy savings has been very substantial and we have been very pleased in how even the cooling is in the box.

Prawning and fishing have not been good here. Even for the more expert fisherman and prawners.

We have run across several groups of high school students doing school sponsored kayak trips. They were very wet these past few days but still seeming to enjoy it.
