Celebrations aboard
15 July 2018
11th July marked our 8th wedding anniversary and where better to enjoy a bottle of Nyetimber which we had brought on board from the U.K. We were parked up in the excellent marina in Cartegena and had taken John to the airport earlier in the evening so he could return to England.
Whilst very sorry to say goodbye to John who had hoped to complete our voyage all the way to the Ionian, this has been by any standards a long time on the boat and 3 more weeks across the Med with weather uncertainties John felt he really had to get back. Nicky and I will now plan the last 1,000Nm with a new crew.
We had such a happy evening reflecting on our good fortune, having children and our families we love to pieces and so many things in life for which to be immensely grateful. Getting us and Al Shaheen to here has certainly been a huge piece of work for us both so itâs been a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what has truly been a shared endeavour and something we had long wanted to make possible.
We spent today visiting the Roman theatre and the attached museum. It transpires this amazing theatre was forgotten about until 1988 when it was discovered during building works. It seems this part of the City was especially down at heel and in need of investment. As a result of the discovery, pictures show how much of the overlying construction was demolished to enable full exploration of the underlying theatre. The preservation has been sympathetic to the various uses to which the Roman theatre has been put since by other civilisations as well as its pre-Roman origins. Our visit on 11th July coincided with the 10th anniversary of the museum opening and we loved the way the history was set out and we walked thru that in awe of both the original 7,000 seater construction and also the fantastic restoration and preservation thatâs been achieved.
