Owen and Eli

Altair is snuggled into Bert Jabins Boat Yard near Annapolis until June 14. We had a quick visit with grandsons Owen and Eli (their parents too) last night in Towson MD. Owen is finishing third grade as well as his lacrosse season. He will come up to Maine again for a week in July by himself and take [...]

999 Miles!

We've put 999 miles on the boat since leaving Puerto Rico on April 14. What a wonderful way to return from the Caribbean. In years past, we've had to hustle on the way home...it's been nice to take our time.

ICW Mustache

We arrived in Hampton VA yesterday after a three- day trek up the ICW from Oriental. For the most part, this section of the ICW is undeveloped and winds its way through North Carolina coastal marshes. Lots of wildlife....osprey, heron, turtles, deer... Quite a leisurely and enjoyable stretch. Best not to be on a schedule... The opening of the Great Bridge lock was delayed two hours as divers cleaned up debris. Another bridge opening was delayed for maintenance. No problem for us but the commercial tugs and barges were antsy.

All that slow pace and natural wilderness stuff goes to hell-in-a-hand- basket as you approach the Elizabeth River and Norfolk VA. All manner of dredges, cranes, and massive conveyor belts along with requisite piles of sand, coal, and gravel line the upper part of the river. The Navy yards are chock-a-block with battleships, cruisers, support vessels, and an array of crazy looking stealth Navy Seal speed boats.

Hampton Yacht Club is our home while here. We tied up and hosed off the boat. The pine pollen from the ICW washed off the boat in yellow-brown streams. The telltale ICW mustache in that same yellow-brown hue follows the shape of the bow wake on the hull. The only way to remove the stain in any sort of Eco-friendly way is to spray it with lemon juice (50-50 concentrated lemon juice and water)... A trick we learned from John Stadelmann on Moonstruck years ago. So Altair got its first of several lemon baths.

We are looking forward to seeing friends here for a few days before starting up the Bay

Long Island is an island of 4000 people, 80 miles long and four miles wide. Known for its bone fishing. People are very friendly.

The lions are painted by prominent Puerto Rican artists. They are really cool standing guard in the parks of Ponce.

Cabo Rojo is the cape at the southwestern corner of Puerto Rico. The beach is miles long, but the beach towns are noisily honky-tonk. The lighthouse and its cliffs and iguanas are most impressive

The northwestern corner of Puerto Rico is blanketed with caves, jungle, dramatic limestone outcroppings, and Taino Indian ruins. Fascinating!

Tom and Sue had been on St Martin for a week before we arrived and were excellent tour guides for us. The island is far more than just The Lagoon!

Tom & Sue Maynes were on board with us in Anguilla. Our first visit to the island and we loved it. Festival, boat racing, and generally enjoying the beaches.
