Anchoring Out - Ft. Pierce to Hobe Sound

Low tide this morning is at 11AM and there is a bridge we need to passage that is within 15 minutes of our departure from Harbortown Marina in Ft Pierce. The bridge is 65' high and our mast is approx 64' high. So, we departed at 9:30 to move very slowly under the bridge.

A Nice Day - Canaveral FL to Fort Pierce FL

We departed Cape Marina at Canaveral FL at 7:30AM and transited the channel inlet to the ocean. We set the sails at 10AM with winds from the ESE at 10-15 MPH.Caribbean music is playing and we are feeling good in 80 degree temps. "Looking good Billy Ray - Feeling good Lewis."...That is a fun quote from [...]

U-Turn - Canaveral to Canaveral - Lesson Learned

We thought we would rest and recover from our BAM-BOOM-BANG night sail by sleeping in and taking our time today. The plan was a leisurly motor down the intracoastal and put 30 miles behind us.

Roller Coaster, BAM-POUND-BOOM! - Offshore to Cape Canaveral

It is still dark and we are standing watch. As winds become more south than north, it is making our sailing more difficult and driving us inland toward the coast. We have been sailing approx 6 to 10 miles offshore to avoid commercial traffic and maintain our final destination. Ideally, we should be 20-40 [...]

Life is Like a Box of Chocolates - Historic Savannah

16 November 2011 | Savannah GA
KG
Our skipper, Jim Nixon, departed this morning. Jim was a great resource to jump start our learning curve and we appreciate his knowledge and would refer his services. We feel we made a new friendship.

Our intent today is to motor the intracoastal 14 miles to Thunderbolt Marina for service of our onboard VHF radio which is not working . We really need to get this fixed as we hope to get out into the Atlantic for several more days and need the range of an onboard radio.

This means we have a short transit day and decided to take a 45 minute trolley ride around Savannah. Savannah is very historic and maintains several parcels of parks throughout. The marina front faces the Savannah River and resembles New Orleans with many shops and restaurants. Across the river is South Carolina. Mid town is within walking distance and maintains tons of shops and restaurants. It is an easy town to transit on foot and is within walking distance of the marina front. Several movies were filmed here including Forrest Gump. We saw the famous Forrest Gump bench and other historical benchmarks.

We are in route (motoring) at 11AM to Thunderbolt and arrived at 1PM. Thunderbolt was very responsive and had a tech on our boat within an hour to troubleshoot our VHF radio problem then immediately scheduled a work order for the following day. Our best guess is that the hurricane disrupted navigation instruments at the top of the mast. The tech concurred and said they will have to inspect the mast head tomorrow. They will also repair the anchor light bulb, Windex and wind instrument. Although we are one of the smallest boats here among multi multi million dollar yachts, Thunderbolt treated us with priority and high efficiency. It is also a very clean, convenient marina with several amenities (laundry included) with a boat store and restaurants within walking distance. I would definately stop here again.

One of the sailboats here is the largest single masted sailboats in the world. The mast is 290' and the boat length is 250'. Check out this link http://www.mirabellayachts.com/floorplan/. There are also several very large ocean going yachts. Where does all this money come from!

Weather was 80 degrees today and partly cloudy. Eric and I are currently (8PM) sitting outside in a gazebo overlooking the marina and Intracoastal. Yes, we are wearing shorts. It is very pleasant.

Hope to have an early repair tomorrow then down the Intracoastal to an accessible Ocean channel. Hope to be on the Atlantic for overnight passages during the weekend and early next week.

Got to sign off... a lighted shrimp boat is coming in and we need to take in the view . It looks like Forrest.
