Venice a la Central America

29 November 2012 | Guanaja
Tired of your job? How about house sitting on a beautiful Island? The third of the Honduran Bay Islands is Guanaja. So different from the other Islands, there are no cars and no roads. Most local people live on a little islet in front of Guanaja , called Bonacca, their version of Latin American Venice..haha. The Gringos live on Guanaja itself in big houses surrounded by lush gardens. We had the opportunity to see one of those properties, wow! Now here you can house sit, move from one Villa to the other, while the owners are on holiday, there is a serious demand for trustworthy people. No gringo likes to leave his house empty, you can not insure anything in Honduras against theft! Fast outboard motors are very much loved by long fingers, you will find your boat, but without the motor, unless you have a proper rigid GRP launcha.
We had lovely walks and met wonderful people there. Our sailing buddies for more than 4 month, Harry & Mathilde from SY Thari got stranded there, unfortunately their boat caught fire and that´s how they got the job as house sitters in beautiful surroundings, while waiting for their insurance to act on the write off. It took quite a while before they heard the verdict and the sum of compensation. Now they are looking for a new boat and you never know, we might meet again in the other big ocean.
The bugs in Guanaja were just very special, we had to sleep with closed windows, since the sandflies found even a way in through our mosquito nets.
