Our First Day Out

19 March 2008 | 13 07.204 N, 88 24.492 W
So what was it like? It was great being out there in the open air, we saw shrimp boats, some fish jumping, birds that would circle around our mast awhile. Of course I was hoping for some ocean sea life to jump along our bow, but figured that'd be asking a bit too much on the first day! What were the chances of that actually happening. The swells and waves were what I'm sure what seasoned sailors would call mild and calm, but to newbies like us, we had some issues. My Dad- no problems- he is so used to being out on Lake Michigan fishing and other trips, and has done some deep sea fishing in Florida, Texas, ST. Croix, that we were very blessed that he and his iron stomach were with us. Jenaya and Micah, being so young would be my guess, we're the next to handle the motion rather well- they both said their tummy hurt, but were not crying or in any discomfort to speak of. Bridget and I faired about the same, but a bit worse than the younger two- we were fine on deck in the open air, but to go below for any reason in to the galley, was not good. We could manage to go below for a quick minute or two to do what was needed, but then had to quickly come back up into the cockpit area. Jim had both the motion and the E-motion to deal with. He was feeling the greatness of the responsibility of being out there, in charge of getting his family across this huge wide open ocean safely and to our next waypoint, and on to our initial stop of Bahia Jiquilisco. He managed to get through it with only losing his stomach once, sometime late afternoon. I made it all the way until after we were anchored and after eating a small amount of dinner before I lost mine. We did not make it to the entrance to Estero Jiquilisco before dark and so we spent our first night of our actual journey anchored out in the Ocean. Thankfully the wind was calm, and the swells were gentle, much more than during the day. No, it wasn't what we planned or wanted for our first night, but we're no worse for wear. Jim slept out on the cushion on the cockpit, it was easier on his stomach and wanted to keep watch overnight.
