Another Early Start
15 April 2008 | Quepos, CR
Hot, Humid, Sunny
Anchor up at 5:05, it was choppier than we've had it since Nicaragua today. Once we got out past the bay entrance the waves were even choppier and more unstable, we were making good time, even as much as 7.9 knots. It was awesome! Then, I went back to bed, and sometime while I was dozing in and out, I noticed the calmer movement across the water. I got up and Jim said once we got out away from the shore more, where the winds were not coming off the mountains and hills and mixing with the waves in the ocean, it calmed right down and we were back to motor sailing. We were able to make fairly good time heading slightly off our course to stay with the wind there was, and were still doing about 5 knots. Then once we got past Punta Judas, we could tack back the other way and hopefully have the wind on the other side and keep going at a pretty good clip. Which, for once, our -plan actually worked out, and we made it to Quepos before dark and in pretty good time- we dropped anchor in time to watch the sunset. Quepos anchorage is busy and noisy with the construction of a new marina. Right now the break walls are in construction, and Micah was excited to count 4 cranes working all around. Plus there must be about 40 or so, mostly sport fishing boats moored in the anchorage. We will be here 2 days before moving just a short distance to a quieter anchorage, and then going to the Manuel Antonio National Park. The kids are anxious to see the howler monkeys, spider monkeys and other wildlife in the park.
