Gummy sharks and other tales

Vessel Name: Amble
Vessel Make/Model: Beneteau Oceanis 43
Hailing Port: Sydney
Crew: Jane and Brett Campbell
About:
Brett is a keen racer. I'm not, so named our boat 'Amble' as a subtle reminder. Herbert, our Ragdoll cat, is also onboard and, at the age of 12, miraculously turned into a sea cat. [...]
Extra: 'Gummy sharks' is a ref to my fear of dying slowly. Good to be positive! In the early days of coastal sailing I was worried about drowning slowly if I fell overboard. The thought of a shark speeding things up cheered me up—but, bother, no teeth.

Calm to chaos (unusual?!)

Here we are in Zante Town It’s a surprisingly big place, which shouldn’t be a surprise as it’s the capital of Zakynthos. Then again, Argostoli is the capital of Cephalonia and, other than great yacht and knee services (and people), not much there. Altho lots of watermelons! Great fruit and veges. Anyway, [...]

Dimitris Theodosis

It is just so wonderful to meet met men such as Dimitris Theodosis. Nothing is too much trouble for him, and although young (I'm getting old!) he's endlessly patient helping, if need be, yachties moor their boats on the town quay; his domain it seems. We even watched him row out to yachts, climb aboard [...]

Washing machines, Zakynthos

Being Saturday (now that took awhile) we've been on the island of Zakynthos for three whole days. Two of which here in St Nikoloas, a tiny village of about two tavernas and a tourist shop -- and quite a few boats, caiques, that take tourists to the Blue Caves.

Navagio Bay, Zakynthos

Up at dawn to sail with the tide. Or not! Up at 7 to have a cup of tea, and then leave Argostoli about 7.30 for the five-or-so-hour motorsail to NW Zakynthos. The weather's looking great, which is handy, as the prevaiing winds are from the NW so rather not get caught on the west coast in bad weather. [...]

Relay part for anchor!

Well, my vocabulary might not be increasing but context is. 'Relay' being my new word of the day.

Octopus!

Poros is a surprisingly pretty spot. The water is fantastic. How many different types of blue are there? And greens? Fun to kayak along the sandy shores, stopping (as I'm not as fit as I should be) to admire the colours.

International Delves Day

07 June 2014
Sue, a schoolfriend from Griffith, and her husband John arrived yesterday to join us for a week. Visitors! Sue (and John) were wonderful, thoughtful and considerate friends to have onboard. An absolute joy and delight.

Now that I've written that so Sue's parents can read it, on with the truth.

The only problem with the week was that it wasn't long enough. Sue named our adventure 'The Beauty Tour' because everything here is so beautiful. Although, if by the slightest chance it wasn't, we weren't going.

Sue and John taxied the five minutes from Corfu airport where they had flown in from drizzly, chilly Glasgow, to our home for the night: Corfu Sailing Club, Old Fortress, Mandraki Harbour. Pretty beautiful name! To get to the sailing club you have to drive (or walk) through the old fortress doors of the Old Fortress (can't help myself!); along the paved and cobbled roads to arrive at a path that's covered with arched bougainvillea and jasmine. Not to mention a rose-petalled gang plank.

A lovely start and it only got better, if that's possible. We stayed at a different place each night, each with a slightly different feel and atmosphere. We'd be up at dawn to sall with the tide, so would get out of bed around 8/8.30 and sail until lunchtime. We'd have the afternoon pottering around a village or harbour. Or turquoise bay.

Sue was the meerkat onboard, popping up her head to watch for any passing boats. (What fleet?) After all my years and years (and years) of watching Sue work at home, it made a nice change for her not to have to do Everything. Admittedly, she would have done even more, if that was possible, but she had to hold Stop Work meetings with herself. And it is a skill to have a stop work meeting before you even start. What a gal!

Anyway, today is International Delves Day (IDD)--which we have duly celebrated. Why, you might ask? Well! I also write a diary, a sort of a kindergarten-style-scrapbook thing. I rarely reread it because it's so boring, but I do like the scrapbook bits. Anyway, I was looking at this day last year--7 June, and who was mentioned but Sue and John. It was the citrus festival in Soller, Majorca and, just like Sue and John's hometown of Hanwood, they make floats and statues out of oranges.

You wouldn't read about it! (Oh dear.) What a coincidence. Anyway, it is now the start of an annual IDD.

Must away to celebrate. (I do recommend the Dutch recipe of an orange slice with anchovies.)
