The Hard To Find, Elusive But Occasionally Needed: Shower

02 December 2009
by Jen
Ok, so it seems that my family does not quite understand how this works. And I guess that this is just something that "Land-Livers" and "Water Gypsies" do not see eye to eye on.

Living on a boat, there are some adjustments. Not standing underneath an endless flow of precious, water heated to what some prefer as a comfortable temperature, is one of those adjustments for us. You see, onboard Anastasia, there are atmost 100 gallons of fresh water available. That sounds like a lot but I assure you it is not. And water is not always easy to find, or even free. We try to top off our tanks whenever we refuel. But remember, we are a sailboat who tries not to use fuel.

The marinas along the journey always offer a shower, but it is for a price. And I think $5-$10 is WAY TOO MUCH to pay for a shower! Especially when the one just a 100 miles south is "free." "Free" is another discussion that I have eluded to in previous entry.

If you are a Cruiser reading this blog, you no doubt understand. If you are like my parents, you have a look on your face like you are disgusted. For all those who are disgusted, here is your challenge. Throughout this week I want you to monitor your water consumption. Make a mental account for all the water you drink, cook with, wash dishes in, brush your teeth with, wash your hands with, and yes...bathe in! Then think of us with our 100 gallons for 2 weeks.
