Really last time

26 May 2018 | St James—Christmas Cove
Ld
This is really our last entry as tomorrow we bring Andiamo around to the boat yard. We went across the bay to Christmas Cove to have a nice calm spot to take down our Bimini top and solar panels. The boat looks pretty naked without much canvas and tomorrow it will lose its sails. Our friends joined us as we crouched under what little shade was left.

We did see our next boat but will need some help. It’s sailed past us under sail and was gorgeous. We got a picture but doesn’t do it justice. It is a replica of a 1924 sailing vessel out of Massachusetts. It’s for sale. Only $16,900,000. I can front some of this but who can donate the other $16,850,000. Maybe a GoFundMe page or a rich cousin. More pictures on this site. https://iyc.com/yachts/columbia/

Last entry for the year

We picked up a mooring at Henley Cay to snorkel. It was pretty but the current was very strong due to the tidal flow. Lesson learned to only go there when tides aren't flowing. We then went back to Caneel Bay for our last night out. Tomorrow morning we will sail to Christmas Cove and begin to take things down on the boat. Dodger, BBQ, cockpit lights, etc and then store things below for the summer. Sunday we take her around and will take off sails and solar panels. We saw several sailboats this season without a mast so we consider ourselves lucky in that regard. We heard over 400 boats were destroyed in the Virgin Islands alone. See everyone next year

Sunset

We were lazy for most of the day after a short sail From Leinster to Maho. When Kim went snorkeling, she noticed a large sucker fish( a Remora) under the boat. At first she thought it might be a shark but we coaxed it out from under the boat with some hamburger.

The winds finally calmed down and no rain today. As always a nice sunset.

Sad

Some sad things today. #1–We are nearing the end of our shortened season due to hurricanes Irma and Maria. We bring Andiamo around to be hauled out a week from today. #2–It was sad to see the impact the storms had on people, structures and coral. #3–We are listening to the Fiddler and Kyle sing about Latitude 18. It has not opened since the storm and what we hear it it may not open. Hopefully, someone will take pity on all of us down here and open it up to the same “dive” standards that once existed. #4–Kyle is married and has a baby. We don’t know if we will see him sing again—especially with no Latitude 18.

But it is still pretty here and next year is a new year. Hopefully Latitude 18 will find a new owner by the time we return. We are looking forward to seeing all of our island friends after a summer in Minnesota

Hiking and eating

We hiked over to The Great House ruins on top of the hill. The views are incredible. It is a large house even by today’s standards and I can’t imagine the cost when you had to carry up all the materials by hand. We then hiked to Brown Bay which was about a mile away but over a hill. It is pretty secluded and as you can tell, the wind is still blowing. Only got rained on a couple of times and it felt pretty good. For evening, we had Double Trouble over along with new friends from Fin Addict. They brought shrimp and mushroom soup. We made a turkey breast in the pressure cooker along with dressing. It was all good and we ate way too much
