Cat Cay
13 November 2009
Cat Cay is about 50 miles across the Gulf Stream from Florida. Here the floor of the ocean rises up steeply to a tremendous coral and sand plateau called the "Great Bahama Bank" (most of it is about 0-15 below the surface of the water depending on wind and tide). Cat Cay is an island just south of Bimini. The island itself is rather small and is owned as a residential community by some 150 very wealthy US citizens. Each has a home in prices ranging from $1.5 to over $7 million. Frankly it has absolutely no appeal. What a way to waste a lot of money. Most of the properties are for sale. We go here because the community has apparently enough influence to get their own customs and immigration officer. Checking in here is a breeze.
