Rum Cay Continued

04 December 2009 | Rum Cay Bahamas
Only seventy one souls make their home on this beautiful island. Independent of the world's financial crisis, the past several years have been a great struggle for them. This is largely because of the collapse of the much touted $750 million dollar "Rum Cay Resort" What was to be a Rock Resorts® "....dream destination...where Christopher Columbus once strode....rising on a 900 acre tract of land...you'll be surrounded by the bset sport fishing and diving in the world...and revel in the deluxe amenities offered in the marina village of Porta Santa Maria...As it says in the pre construction brochure...."You now have the rare opportunity to call it your own, as the owner of an ultra luxurious marina residence, island villa or ocean estate"

The rather naïve developers certainly bit off more than they could chew. They seem to have completely ignored the fact that the island is 165 miles southeast of Nassau! The logistics of such a huge construction project in this remote out island area are insurmountable. I can't help thinking that some incompetent and rather chubby pension fund manager, sitting over a glass of Montrachet, was part of the decision making team. Anyway the project was up for about half a year. This resulted in much bulldozing and blasting of pristine marsh land. What is left looks post nuclear. Abandon containers, trucks and millions of yards of gravel pushed into what was to be the artificial island within the deep water yacht basin. The environmental and local economic effects were completely ignored. Another "project" bites the dust in a cloud of island rumors of incompetence, greed, fraud and corruption.
