Most of the time trade winds from the East dominate the weather around the Gulf Stream between Florida and the Bahamas. Unless they are overpowered by another weather system, they blow the year-round from a fairly steady 12 to 25 knots in the winter. We had to wait out the most dangerous which are from the North. These winds can turn the fast moving current of the Gulfstream into a troublesome brew of house high waves. We like the night crossing because the morning light is helpful at landfall.
