Anne
made it across Queen Charlotte. We got out of our warm bed at 4:00 am and with me on the bow with a handheld spot light and Rob at the helm on the radar, we picked out way out of the Namu Islets back into Fitzhugh Sound in total - I mean absolutely pitch-black darkness. There was one light blinking on the end of an island ahead that I became hypnotized by. So I left Rob to it and went back to bed. I got up a couple of hours later to relieve him and managed the helm for about an hour and a half at which point we entered the Sound and things picked up. Lots of tugs with tows, lots of boats trying to beat the weather, lots of swell and plenty of wind. I wish could have given Rob more of a rest, but the large boat traffic is somewhat intimidating so he took over and ran the boat from about 10:00 AM until we made the dock in Port Hardy about 2:00 PM. In between I was miserable, not really seasick, but feeling punky, and tired.
Not much happening in Port Hardy. We walked to town to pick up some fresh produce and resupply our diet coke stores, loaded up the boat and cast off by 11, heading out across Queen Charlotte Straight for the Broughton Islands. We have heard so much about them, I hope we aren't disappointed. Our plan is to spend the next ten days or so mooching among the islands. Perhaps the weather will cooperate and give us back the sunshine!
Milo got another quickie haircut on the dock and is looking pretty spiffy. And we hit a log on the way across. Sheeshe, what next? No damage, but the noise of a waterlogged full-grown tree striking the hull is sickening to say the least. I'm thinking pome-itinis.
