Tidal, Title and Tied
02 December 2015 | Pulau Langkawi
Wednesday 2 December 2015
Computer took a little vacation and ditched what would have been this entry in an undisclosed location. What's taken on holiday stays on holiday. A digest of previous verbiage would follow if anybody could remember, so here's something else.
Ran unrestricted into Straits Quay Marina 2 hours before high tide showing 1.7 meters on the deep-o-meter. As draft is 2.1, assume channel silted in rather than rocked, graveled or sanded in. Pulau Penang (also spelled Pinang with, it seems, little preference) is new favorite location in all the world. Beautiful marina (except for that depth thing), great food, terrific shopping plus a plethora (slight hyperbole) of boat stuff. Enjoyed the 4 best meals of all time (slight hyperbole) including enough pig's knuckle with crackling to feed a medium-sized family of ravenous mongooses until 2025 (slight hyperbole). Wayward shot across the bow of diet landed amidships, sinking the entire enterprise. Will begin anew at a time and place to be unannounced.
Georgetown, named "Pearl of the Orient" and connected to the mainland by 2 bridges, is the second largest city in Malaysia. Like Avis they try harder. Won't attempt to describe all the cool stuff here, not wanting to spoil your fun of discovery when flying over to visit, but you'll see. Book now and stay a month or buy a condo and move in.
With all the distractions, not to mention that computer discommodity, did little but screw off during the entire stay in Penang. Nevertheless, managed to accomplish a few items on the list: cleaned and reattached aft hatch seal after old adhesive no longer did, re-acquainted masthead anchor light with proper operation while breaking strobe tube (replacement en route) and re-galvanized chain and anchors, which were delivered with mere moments to spare for boarding chartered bus to excellent rally dinner at Fort Cornwallis (named for the guy George Washington defeated at Yorktown, Virginia, to entice England to bugger off and tax someone else).
Unfortunately Jan, who has been suffering from influenza or dengue fever symptoms past 3 days, didn't get to enjoy the excellent dinner or the return home, sopping, from a subsequent thunderstorm. She was, however, no doubt delighted by departure for Langkawi at 0500 to make the tide this morning before collapsing in a heap for most of the duration. She insists that I shoot her, but the paperwork would be murder and her sister would likely be annoyed and not speak to me again, so my hands are tied.
