Gypsy Girl Mosaic in Zeugma
Saturday 6 November 2021
In Gaziantep, founded as Seleucia by Seluicus (yet another ancient ruler who was just a wee bit narcissistic), one of four generals who divided up Alexander the Great's empire after his death at age 32 (serious over-achiever), Zeugma is the largest mosaic museum in the world, containing 1700 square meters of Hellenistic Greek and Roman mosaics in a 30,000 sq meter building. Detail and nuance of expression on depicted faces is remarkable as at close working distance it's difficult to see.
Food was the primary occupation in the Hatay bazaar. Particularly enjoyed sweets: baklava and kunefe, which were specialties, made with spun pastry, pistachios and lots of syrup. Some of the gaggle discovered they possessed too many lira, so passed on the burden to local merchants.
