Southing

Friday 13 September 2024
Is it Friday the thirteenth again? We started early in calm to pass
through the lock out of Bras D'Or and get a jump on expected adverse
wind later morning. Now anchored north end of Nova Scotia mainland
until perhaps 2200 when wind is speculated by GRIB (a Guess Readily
Imitating Bullsqueeze) to veer around for a close reach.
Saturday
Didn't shift until 0330, but now moving smartly under full sail. This
will continue, he postulates, to nearly south end of Nova Scotia, but
that being a day away gives GFS (Get Flipping Serious) model a chance
to recant its insouciant blather. However, if all goes to plan, expect
end of passage Monday well before sundown. We have line cutter, but
running through lobster pots after dark is strongly ill-advised.
And speaking of euphemisms, how is it that everyone knows that 'darn',
'dang', 'shucks', 'shoot', 'fudge' and 'flipping' are nicey words that
convey a naughty intent, but pretend that as long as the real word
isn't used it's polite? Busted! Also, since we're engaging in pet
peeve ranting, how about we use 'your' & 'you're' properly? 'Your' is
not a short form of 'you are'. Dint you're Englesh teechers never lern
you nuthin?
A tinge of light on the southeastern horizon portends another beautiful
day. After rain and fog a month ago, days lately have been clear and
sunny. Although uncomfortably frigid at night making sleeping under
several blankets cosy but getting out of bed emphatically
procrastinatable (not a real word), temperatures ease up into light
jacket pleasant during afternoons.
Sunday
Brilliant sail Saturday down NS coast. Now motoring directly into two
knot current along bottom of the province heading west before wind
begins backing to southwest this evening. Anticipate close port reach
into Bar Harbor tomorrow morning.
Over-withdrew from ATM, then utilized credit card too often, so have
excess Canuck bucks. Perhaps when we go for Jan's Nexxus interview on
twenty third, expensive crap in St Stephen, NB, will demand to be
purchased.
Jack & Jan
P.S. "Farewell to Nova Scotia" on "Taste of the Maritimes" album.
Nice.
