Idle Hands

01 October 2024 | Chesapeake Bay Somewhere
Thursday 26 September 2024

Boisterous ride from Rockland to Cape Cod Bay. And cold. Beautiful calm, quiet night just west of canal in Wings Cove of Buzzard's Bay. Now en route beam reaching with reefed sails to Newport.

Enthused or not, you will now be presented results of Louis Vuitton Cup first race day of finals: Ineos Brittania one; Luna Rossa Prada Perelli one. Next two races Saturday. Best of thirteen. If for whatever bizarre reason you, like me, wish to watch live, select Barcelona in your VPN and search "America's Cup" in Youtube.

Saturday

In a crowded Newport harbor Thursday midnight when wind shifted and increased. We dragged anchor and had to reset in cold, heavy rain. Then weather gods, no doubt to make up for our ill treatment night before, gave us a very pleasant Friday, warm and dry with some sun. As is our wont we mostly fiddled it away in a couple of coffee shops. Jan bought replacement foulie pants and we ended the day enjoying Maine lobster aboard before getting to sleep early.

Departed late this morning bound for Chesapeake Bay. Route takes us out into the North Atlantic east of Block Island, Long Island and New Jersey, around Cape May and then up the Delaware River. If weather models are correct (hey, we heard it sometimes happens!) sailing will be beautiful entire way to C and D Canal. This, he avers confidently, will take us into the upper bay by Monday afternoon. After that there will be no deadline worries for at least a few weeks... honest! We be chillin'.

Tuesday

All the news that nobody cares about: Louis Vuitton final tied at four wins each. Ride from Newport to Cape May was friskier than ideal, but sail up Delaware River, nice. Arrived Ford Creek in Chesapeake Bay yesterday afternoon. Now meandering south. Nothing urgent for awhile. Mundane is good. Sloth rules. And yet ennui remains at bay at least for immediate future.
