Quebec to Portneuf
24 July 2017
It was time to provision for the next leg of the journey. Fuel, water and groceries. The tide was with us as of 1600hrs so we had lots of time. We headed out an hour before tide change thru the locks of Bassin Louise. The trip past the centre of Quebec was slow. 2-4 knots. We had a good wind on our back and flew the jib with the motor. We made 2-4 knots against the current until about Quebec bridge. Just after that things changed and we got a lift from the tide. The wind was blowing from behind for the only time on the up river journey and it was raining. We did not care, we started flying with the tide. 7-8 SOG. Four short hours later we arrived in Portneuf, worried about water depth according to the books. We tentatively went in and found that even here the water levels were high so no problem. We met very friendly people in a well protected harbour and dockage and settled in for the night. We confirmed our thoughts re running the rapids tomorrow with local knowledge and the local knowledge said exactly what we were thinking. We have this down pat now. Beer and smoked meat was next on the agenda.
