I love Barra for it's full Mexican persona. The friendliness of it's people, the wonderful food and endless beaches are like coming home. Although Amanda has left weather behind there is the smell of wet earth in the air and everywhere you look there is new life. There are fist sized land crabs in major abundance, running along with their tiny claws raised ready to fight if they can't run fast enough. They are quite brazen for crabs and Ginger has gained a healthy respect for them and passes on chasing them in favor of the multitude of accommodating lizards that zip across her path.
All day long we have felt left over storm effects of the dying Amanda. She was touted as one of the strongest Pacific hurricanes to ever threaten Mexico in the month of May, but her bark was much worse than her bite. She was a squirrelly one though and each time the forecasters tried to corral her she would up and go off in a another direction. Tonight she is dying.... right on top of us. The howling winds are her dying breaths and we celebrate her demise with a dinner at the hotel with friends from sv Akka. Meanwhile, southward there is another low, birthing Amanda's brother or sister.
These birds are called Tapacaminos, which means "on the road" because they lay their eggs in the middle of a dirt road and that's where the little puff balls are hatched. The hatch-lings are so well camouflaged that it was hard to focus the camera on them. We call them whippoorwills or night jars. I found this one in the dirt parking lot next to the marina and could hear her song at night, it is stunningly beautiful. Luckily, no one ran over her.
After an exhaustive internet search, I think these are "Long Fin Trevally". Feel free to correct me.
Dois is plotting our escape from this paradise as I write. I'm content to let him devise a plan, although I'm even more content to sit here and let the hurricanes pass us by, if they will. Neither of us has any desire to get caught out in bad weather, let alone a hurricane. But Dois is really anxious to go and so I will entertain a run to Puerto Vallarta if it's well in front of any nastiness.
Peaceable
